Sources and method
Where the information in this archive comes from, and how it is checked.
Method
Every entry links out to the material it was built from, listed at the foot of its page. Where accounts disagree - and with this subject they often do - the entry follows the earliest and most direct reporting available, and notes the disagreement rather than quietly picking a side.
Dates are given as precisely as the sources support. A report known only to a year is recorded to that year rather than being given a plausible day.
Kinds of source used
- Contemporary newspaper reporting, where the event is recent enough to have any.
- Official case files and inquiry documents, including declassified military and government releases.
- Regional folklore collections and county record offices for the older material.
- Reference works and encyclopaedia entries, used as a starting point for tracing the primary account rather than as the account itself.
Mapping and coordinates
- OpenStreetMap - base mapping and the tiles used on this site.
- Nominatim - place lookup and coordinates.
Corrections
If an entry is wrong, incomplete, or attributes something to the wrong place, please say so and it will be corrected.
