The report
On the night of February 8–9, 1855, mysterious hoof-shaped tracks appeared in freshly fallen snow across Devon, England. The prints, about 4 inches long and 3 inches wide, continued in a straight line over roofs, rivers, and high walls, seemingly ignoring natural barriers. They extended for more than 100 miles. Contemporary newspapers reported widespread panic and speculation that they were the marks of the Devil. Explanations have ranged from escaped kangaroos to hopping rodents, but no definitive answer has been reached.
