The report
The Lambton Worm is a well-established Northumbrian legend: the young John Lambton fished up a strange creature which later grew into a monstrous 'worm' (dragon) that coiled in the River Wear and attacked livestock and villagers. The hero eventually slays the beast after receiving special armour and counsel. Versions date to medieval ballads and the tale remains part of regional identity and place-names.
