The report
Black Annis (or 'Black Agnes') is a fearsome hag or witch of Leicestershire folklore, often depicted as a blue-faced crone with iron claws who lived in a cave in the Dane Hills near Leicester. Stories from the medieval and early modern period warned children to behave or be taken by Black Annis. While folklorists point to moral/ritual origins, the legend has persisted in local place-names and oral tradition.
